ABOUT HRV

What is an HRV test?

An HRV test is a heart rate variability test. It is a non-invasive test that takes 5 minutes whilst you sit relaxed in a chair with 4 sensors attached to you – one to each wrist and one to each ankle. The sensors measure various points of your heart rate in millisecond intervals and record the results via a device that is linked to a computer. At the end of the test our consultant will provide you with a full print out of your test, explain your results and recommend any necessary treatment protocol.

An HRV test helps us to understand whether your body is in a state where it is able to repair itself efficiently and a key factor in this is whether your body has the energy in reserve to fuel the regeneration process. We are able to assess your body's energy reserves through measuring the total power of your mitochondria within  your cells.

Mitochondria are the power houses of life, think of them as your batteries. If your batteries are flat then you will struggle to deal with any level of stress on the body; whether this is external stress such as your job or internal stress such as high blood pressure or diabetes.

FAQ

WHAT CAN AN HRV TEST TELL ME?

It is not a method of diagnoses for specific diseases or conditions. It can determine body status in terms of:

  • Your average, resting heart rate

  • Ability of the body to regenerate and repair i.e. is your body effective in preventing and fighting disease

  • Your body’s ability to burn fat as fuel efficiently

  • Stress load – a measure of the amount of stress your body is under – internally – and how your body systems are coping with the level of stress. Whether you have the reserves available to cope with everyday stresses – emotional and/or physical

  • Ability for your body to switch between regeneration and repair mode and fight or flight mode. Are you reacting in a balanced way or is there an over or under reaction, physiologically?

  • Are you suffering irregular heartbeats – arrythmias – and are these a cause for concern?

  • Is your body efficient at repair, digestion, absorption and able to eliminate toxins and waste products? Are you able to fight disease?

  • Is your body coping with the demands you are placing on it? Is your heart able to meet the current demands and is it in the optimal state to deal with stress?

  • Is your systemic energy, immune system and hormonal system operating at optimal levels and are you able to adapt to the ever-changing demands you place on your body?

  • Is your nervous system able to cope with the demands of every day life? Are you full of energy at a cellular level or are your cellular batteries drained?

  • We can tell you whether you are at risk of a sudden, serious cardiac incident

  • Provide an indication of whether your biological age is higher or lower than your actual age

HRV is considered a proactive and preventative approach to health and wellness, allowing users to make lifestyle changes long before symptoms of disease are present.

ARE THE RESULTS OF THE TEST EASY TO UNDERSTAND?

Yes. After each test you will be provided with a full print-out. The print-out provides you with a summary score of your heart rate variability. A score of 0 means that you have high heart rate variability (this is a positive result) and a score of 10 means that you have a low heart rate variability (this provides us with an opportunity to work on improving the HRV reading).

You will also receive a traffic light score of green, amber or red. The print out provides a detailed break-down of your HRV test and this helps us determine the best course of action to improve the HRV score or to work on specific areas . A score in the green zone may still improve with additional action.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I HAVE AN HRV TEST?

After your initial control test, we recommend that you have a re-test 8 weeks later. This allows time for our action plan to take effect and we normally suggest you have two tests with a result in the green zone before stopping the testing and related action plans.
In terms of achieving a score where your body is in optimal state for recovery, repair and regeneration most people take between 12 to 14 weeks from their initial control test (some clients can take 20 weeks before reaching stabilisation).

I HAVE A WEARABLE DEVICE THAT MEASURES HRV, WHY DO I NEED AN HRV TEST WITH YOU?

Many of these devices are not intended for measuring the detailed fluctuations needed to to calculate an accurate HRV reading. Some do not record the RR intervals in your heart beat and if they do they often provide a smoothed, adjusted or averaged RR measure; this removes the important variability measures in your heart rate which are essential for an accurate test. Our testing kit is extremely sensitive, clinical grade testing kit which uses 4 different sensors to accurately track every single variability in your heart rate in millisecond intervals. The kit was developed in conjunction with NASA and the Mars 500 project, so you can be assured of its accuracy and reliability.

WHO WOULD BENEFIT FROM KNOWING AND MANAGING THEIR HRV?

Anyone who is interested in improving their health or who has existing health concerns will benefit from monitoring and managing their HRV. HRV does not diagnose or treat specific health issues but it provides an insight into whether your body, internally, is in a healthy, optimal state to adapt and deal the disease process and degeneration. In simple terms, it tells us whether your body’s own regulatory systems are working efficiently.
If they are not then we provide supplements to support your body regaining the regulatory control needed for health, wellness and recovery.

WILL I NEED TO TAKE ANY MEDICATION AFTER MY HRV TEST?

Firstly, it is important that you continue to take any prescribed medications you are presently taking. We may discuss and recommend a programme of supplementation using the patented formulas available to us and we may ask that you stop/pause taking any additional supplements that you are already taking. Whether you need to take our supplements along with the exact type and duration will depend entirely on your HRV test result.

Our patented supplements provide the following benefits:

  • Improve sports performance, endurance and recovery

  • Preventative against heart disease

  • Prevent cognitive decline

  • Anti-aging

  • Powerful antioxidants

  • Bind toxic heavy metals and support elimination from the body

IS THERE ANYONE WHO SHOULD NOT HAVE AN HRV TEST?

An HRV test is suitable for everyone but if you are on medication for a heart related issue e.g. betablockers or you have a pacemaker fitted we will need to make some manual adjustments to your reading and scores.

DO I NEED TO PREPARE OR DO ANYTHING BEFORE MY HRV TEST?

To ensure accurate results we ask that you do not exercise, drink caffeine, be under the influence of alcohol or have a large meal two hours prior to your test. It is possible for us to make manual adjustments to readings to account for some of these circumstances but you will receive a more accurate reading if we do not have to make manual adjustments.

HOW DOES THE TEST WORK?

The sensors measure your heart beats in millisecond intervals in the same way as an electrocardiograph (ECG). The length and peaks of each beat are recorded and the signals between each pulse are measured and evaluated by the computer software to produce your report.

I DON’T REALLY UNDERSTAND WHAT IT IS MEASURING, CAN YOU EXPLAIN IN A BIT MORE DETAIL?

The heart never stops beating from the moment you are born and you do not have to think consciously to make it beat, thankfully! The heart, along with many other automatic body functions are controlled by your nervous system, specifically the autonomic nervous system (ANS). The ANS is further divided into something called your sympathetic nervous system (SNS) and your parasympathetic nervous system (PNS). The SNS is often referred to as ‘fight’ or ‘flight’ because it is your stress response system and the PNS is often referred to as ‘rest’ and ‘digest’ because it is your relaxation response system. Each of these systems and how they react is coordinated by a part of the brain called the hypothalamus, which is an almond shaped gland located at the base of the brain.
So in simple terms, a HRV test is able to tell us about the interaction and balance between the brain, heart, hormonal system, other regulatory systems and the body’s cellular energy system. The body’s cellular energy is fuelled by something called mitochondria, which are found in almost every cell of your body. Muscle cells, including your heart cells, have an abundance of mitochondria so the health and efficiency of the mitochondria of your heart is vital for optimal health.

WHAT ARE MITOCHONDRIA AND WHY ARE THEY SO IMPORTANT?

They provide 90% of the body’s energy. Think of them as the batteries of life – if they are running low or flat then you will feel flat… and your body processes will also not have the energy to do the job they need to do, which is to support a constant cycle of repair and regeneration.

IS HRV TESTING SOMETHING NEW?

HRV testing has been a recognised medical grade test in Russia since 1966 and the US since 1996. It has been used widely by NASA and the Russian Mars 500 space programme as a method for measuring the effect of space travel on the human body and the ageing process. The patented supplement formulas have been devised after over 15 years of research and tests, supporting the body at a cellular and structural level, ensuring the best opportunity for the body to regulate the billions of processes needed to sustain health.

HOW ACCURATE IS THE TEST?

The test kit we use is medical grade and has been used by NASA, the Mars 500 project and in many scientific research studies. It measures the R-R peaks in 1000th of a second intervals so it is extremely sensitive and accurate.

WHAT IS THE COST OF THE TEST?

The cost of the initial control test is £39 and the cost of follow-up appointments is £29.
